Hypnotherapy - FAQ

Q. What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and focused attention that can access both the conscious and subconscious mind. A hypnotist will help you go into a state of deep relaxation where you are focused only on what the hypnotist is saying to you. After you reach this trance you will be given pre-agreed on suggestions that will help you reach your goals. After this the hypnotist will help you come back to full consciousness.

People experience hypnosis routinely in their lives. Ex: You've been driving a familiar route for quite a while and realize you don't remember part of the drive. You're reading a book and become unaware of all that is happening around you.

Q. How does it feel to be hypnotized?

Every person is unique and different. Some people say that their body feels like a lead weight, others say they feel as though they’re floating away. Most people will agree that it’s a nice feeling because they are more relaxed that they have ever been before.

Q. Will I give away any secrets whilst I am hypnotized? Or will I be made to do anything against my will?

No, you won’t say or do anything at all that you don’t want to. If you were given suggestions that you didn’t morally agree with you would come out of hypnosis or disregard the suggestions. Hypnosis work is within your subconscious mind that houses all your memories and values.

Q. Are there any side effects from hypnosis?

The only side effects are the beneficial ones of feeling more relaxed afterwards and feeling more positive about whatever it was you sought hypnotherapy for. Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state.

Q. Will I remember everything afterwards?

That depends how deep in hypnosis you are.

When you are in a trance the communication is with your subconscious mind on various levels so you may not remember word for word what the hypnotist has said, but you'll find that segments of the training often come to the conscious level, typically the suggestions that will best help you. Most hypnotist will provide a recording of the session so you may listen to it for a number of days to reinforce the changes you desire to make.

Q. How do I know I will wake up from hypnosis?

No-one has ever remained in hypnosis indefinitely. Even if something were to happen to the hypnotherapist halfway through the session, you would still ‘come out’ of the trance state once rapport had been broken.

Q. I went to a hypnotherapist once before and it didn’t work. Does this mean I’m not able to be hypnotized?

The most common reason for failure to induce trance is lack of rapport. During your free appointment with the hypnotist you will be able to see if you are a good match. Most usually lasting results happen after a couple of sessions, depending on the reasons why you have chosen hypnotherapy and if you follow instructions to listen to the recording of the session daily until your next session. During your free appointment ask the hypnotist what to expect.

Q. Can I be treated for different problems at the same time?

You can – if they are related issues, however because hypnosis requires a complete focus of attention it is far better to concentrate on one problem at a time.

People wishing to stop smoking (for example) who are afraid of doing so in case they gain weight can be helped with the correct approach. This is because many of us experience ‘symptom substitution’ – we can substitute one habit for another. The suggestions given to you may be something like, "I now enjoy taking deep breaths when I think about smoking," or "I am now satisfied with chewing gum and not choosing to smoke." There are many like these that can help the person become a non-smoker without over eating.

Q. What is the difference between psychotherapy and hypno-therapy?

Psychotherapy is an umbrella term, simply defined is a comprehensive treatment process by a psychologist, psychiatrist or other mental health provider. These types of therapist have received various levels of medical training and degrees, are licensed to provide their services. The issues the client desires help with are deeper and require longer time to reach their goals then a hypnotherapist is qualified for. Note: some hypnotists also have the above mentioned licenses.

Hypnotherapy is provided by trained hypnotist, but have no requirement to be licensed. Their services are typically shorter in term and focus on goals for the future. The purpose of hypnosis is to make positive changes in self-talk, habits, focus, reach your goals. It it not therapy for past emotional events or in-depth issues. It can often work well for clients in other therapies, with referral from those providers.

Note:

If any sudden problem should arise, anything important that needed your attention, you would be back to normal instantly. The state of hypnosis will be totally gone at once and you will react and respond correctly, and exactly as you normally would.
