Still just about 6 weeks out from hip replacement surgery I forget how important it is to just rest. The past couple of weeks included for me the July 4th holiday, a loved one being hospitalized and an awesome concert. One week was pure stress and the other pure fun, both weeks required additional time, travel and walking that my recovering body tried to accommodate in routine fashion but needed extra rest. After a night of many hours sleep and the following day filled with naps I feel ready to go again.
The amount of rest required is different for each person and can change for that person depending on what is happening in their life at that moment. A healthy person whose lifestyle includes good food choices and exercise may need less sleep and rest than a person who is recovering from injury or a health issue who may need more sleep and rest, along with prescribed exercise to win their health back. Be suspicious of those web sites that quote what your needs should be without knowing you. I like to read through various sources of information, and then decide what might be best for me individually.
I’ve gained enough confidence so that now when I need to seek help from folks in the medical world I’m not uncomfortable asking a lot of questions. I also pay attention to my comfort level with the person I’ve enlisted and have been able to change to another professional when I suspect my health would be better attended to by someone else. Not all doctors and health care persons are created equal.
So why have I included the above in my blog? Various reasons! Are you aware of your needs? Do you have the self confidence to trust instincts? Are you comfortable asking questions? Has someone in the past made you feel less than by telling you to just suck it up? Even if they meant well? Is it time for you to bring balance into your life and thoughts?
